Lantern (Part 3), 2018

Ink on paper

10 x 15 in

In Asian culture, paper lanterns are seen as an ancient symbol of blessing and wish, especially when the New Year is approaching. The craftsmanship of making paper lanterns has been handed down from generation to generation. In this series of drawings, I depict a Utopia-like world, where people are manufacturing giant lanterns and preparing for the coming the festival. The scenes include cultural activities, ancient architecture, ancient printmaking and woodworking process, and vegetational scenery.
